MHRB Functions

The Board’s purpose is to monitor the imposition of civil commitment for reasons of mental illness, by providing an expert and independent tribunal that conducts reviews of decisions made by authorised psychiatrists to treat people as involuntary or security patients.

Member Appointments

Appointment of Part-time Members

The Board has three types of members: Legal, Psychiatrist and Community. The President and members of the Board are appointed by the Governor in Council. The President is appointed by Governor in Council on the recommendation of the Minister for Mental Health and holds the full-time office for five years.
